Does Penis Size Really Matter?

Penis size is a big seller on ATW. Well, it is if listings are anything to go by. A quick search of listings on the platform revealed the following interesting statistics: there are more than 540 listings that mention shrimp; there are more than 1,000 listings that mention penis; there are close to 2,000 listings that mention SPH (small penis humiliation); and there are about 3,400 listings for dick rating! Why are sellers and buyers seemingly obsessed with penis size? The sheer number of listings suggest that penis size is a lucrative seller on ATW.

Where do I stand (pardon the pun) in relation to penis size? Well, I don’t need a wheel barrow, nor do I need a magnifying glass as I fit in the unexciting average size bracket. I don’t mind admitting it. But to read some of the listings and posts on the Dashboard you’d think I should be ashamed to be so “small” compared to the king-size alpha buyers and alpha-partnered sellers on ATW. Let me tell you why I’m not and burst a big bubble about penis size.

6 inches is the length most men believe is the average penis size, but it’s an urban myth. According to a study published in 2021 by the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, the average length of an erect penis is in fact between 5.1 and 5.5 inches or 12.95 and 13.97 cm – a bit shorter than a modern iPhone. Because many studies in the past have relied on self-report – a recipe for exaggeration and bias! – the actual average length is probably nearer the lower end of this range. Surely this can’t be true? But it is and these figures are corroborated by many other research studies.

So if the average length of an erect penis is between 5.1 and 5.5 inches, how big is it when it isn’t erect? A recent study in the World Journal of Men’s Health suggests the average length of a flaccid penis is between 3.2 and 3.6 inches or 8.16 and 9.23 cm, although flaccid length can vary significantly due to factors like temperature, e.g. the cold, or stress.

If these measurements are correct, how do we explain the fact that some penises are much smaller and others much larger than the average ranges quoted above? In statistics we call these outliers – abnormally small or large values in a data set, which means they are in a minority and not the majority as many listings and posts on the Dashboard might imply.

Of course, there are always variations in data. For example, we know that Sub-Saharan Africa has slightly higher averages whereas East Asia has lower averages. North America and Europe are broadly similar to the global averages mentioned above. Ecuadorian men apparently have the largest erect penises in the world at close to 7 inches, whereas Cambodian men, on average, are the smallest at just under 4 inches. Out of 88 countries ranked by Worlddata.info according to erect penis size, the UK is in 67th place but still within the average range. Unfortunately, Rule Britannia doesn’t translate into larger than average penis size except in the imagination!

Now that we’ve got facts and figures out of the way, let’s return to our seeming obsession with penis size. The idea that a larger penis is somehow better than a smaller one is a myth perpetuated by a number of factors: the media, cultural perception, sexual stereotypes, and even personal preferences. However, for most people penis size has negligible impact on relationship quality, reproductive capability, or sexual satisfaction. In fact, the larger the penis, the greater the risk of pain, injury, torn condoms, and gagging according to some studies. Of course, an abnormally small penis can make conception more challenging, but there is no correlation between penis size and fertility – sperm quality and its ability to “swim” efficiently are key to fertilising an egg.

Large penis size is often associated with notions of power, masculinity, endurance, and virility. The media often promote a large penis as an ideal even though it is physiologically flawed as a concept and at variance with true data. Pornographic movies, magazines, and websites featuring men with huge penises reinforce the idea that a large penis is symbolic of a man’s masculinity. However, they are not representative of the average penis and create unrealistic expectations, pressure and anxiety for those who believe that what they are viewing is normal. It is unsurprising therefore that many men end up underestimating the size of their own penis. This in turn can lead to anxiety, shame, and body dysmorphia, and may ultimately affect sexual functioning and satisfaction.

Women’s exaggerated sexual responses to larger than average penises in pornographic movies also reinforce the idea that all women prefer men with larger penises. Whilst some women do, it is not a defining factor for many women as research studies have confirmed. Other factors such as emotional connection, communication, and sexual skills are more important for overall sexual satisfaction.

Let me conclude this blog with a provocative idea. Our perception of beauty is constantly changing and influenced by trends in fashion. If large breasts and tiny waists can go out of fashion so too can our obsession with large penises. Maybe small penises will come back into fashion!

Ridiculous, I hear readers saying, but consider this. There was once a time when the small penis was seen as a thing of beauty. How many ancient Greek or Roman statues have you seen with large genitalia? Very few as large, erect penises were not considered desirable or a sign of power or strength in ancient Greece or Rome. In fact, large penises were not only seen as vulgar, but they were also associated with idiocy and bestial lust, e.g. satyrs. In contrast, the small penis was a sign of beauty, intellect and self-control. Aristophanes, the ancient Greek playwright, once wrote that the ideal male should have “a gleaming chest, bright skin, broad shoulders, tiny tongue, strong buttocks, and a little prick.” Hmm, I’d better work on my shoulders! 😜
