Hiya! I’m Lexi, and I thought I’d share a little story about how I got started on AllThingsWorn, how it’s changed my life, and why I’ll always be grateful for this wild platform we’re all part of.
I first joined ATW when I was 19 and in my first year at the University studying Fine Arts. I was constantly juggling coursework, social life and shifts as a waitress but still never quite managing to cover all the bills. I have always been interested in selling used items, and I thought, “Why not give it a go?”. So, I set up my profile, listed a few items, and honestly didn’t expect much from it at first.
Back then, I was pink fluffy everything! Hello Kitty socks, sparkly nails, and about a million lacy sets. I leaned hard into the cute, girly vibes and it worked. My first few sales came in quickly and it gave me the biggest confidence boost. For the first time, I felt in control of something that was fully mine.
But what started as a bit of extra cash on the side turned into something much bigger.Without even realizing it, I was learning skills that I’d end up using every single day in“real life”. From marketing and branding, to customer service and time management, I figured out how to write listings that caught people’s attention. How to take half-decent photos with bad lighting and a phone camera and how to keep people coming back. I learned how to talk to buyers professionally (even when they weren’t), how to set clear boundaries, and how to manage orders. I was basically running a one-woman business in my uni bedroom.
Fast forward almost 2 years, I’ve been offered an amazing apprenticeship opportunity, retired most of the pink fluff (though Hello Kitty still has a place in my private life), and I’m just about to start an apprenticeship in marketing.
Social media, copywriting, understanding audiences, working to deadlines, creating a ‘brand’ – all of it. I walked into my interview and spoke about how I built my own little online shop, promoted it, kept customers happy, and learned by doing. Did I say it was through selling my knickers and custom vids? Absolutely not. But I still told the truth – just with a bit of creative editing.
So if you’re a new seller, thinking about joining, or just curious about where all this could lead – don’t underestimate yourself. Whether you’re here for the money, the confidence, or just for fun, there’s so much to gain. What you do here *is* valuable, and it *does* count. So yeah, from a Hello Kitty uni-girl to a full-on corporate baddie with a marketing job and a killer pair of heels, cheers ATW, you really started it all!
